Hi friends! This post is two days late because I knew I wanted to write about our time at the Big E yesterday, but I was too exhausted from it to actually write about it afterwards, so I'm writing about it tonight instead. =D One of the things I love about living in Connecticut is that I've become aware of things that were never on my radar while living in New York. One big example of that is the existence of state fairs. Connecticut has several state fairs that occur throughout September and October (I'm bringing my fam to one next Saturday, in fact!), but there's actually a state fair for all of New England, and that is called the Big E, which is short for the Eastern States Exposition. Google tells me that it is the largest agricultural fair in the Eastern part of the U.S., and it is the sixth largest fair in the U.S. as well. It is held towards the end of September every year in West Springfield, MA, and every state within New England participates. There are all sorts of things that go on at the Big E. There are carnival rides, a multitude of food vendors, an assortment of animal shows, concerts, livestock, and craft vendors. In addition, each state is given a house (The CT one is pictured behind me. Side note: I really liked my outfit that day!) where you can find common goods found within that state. My favorite state house to visit is Vermont, hands-down. Have you ever eaten maple cotton candy? If not, you need to try it. It's amazing! I like it way better than regular cotton candy. We always buy some of that and also some maple sugar candy. YUM!
This was my third year at the Big E. We went with Peter's third oldest brother, so it was a smaller group than in the past, but it was still a fun outing. I've seen new things each year too. I always enjoy going to the building where they put on several horse contests (horses are my fave!), and this year's were a little different. They had a contest for horse-drawn carts that are meant for one person, and they had a contest for English riding, but they ALSO had a contest for costumes! One horse was covered from head-to-toe to look like a blue dragon. It had a blue tail and everything! Peter and I sometimes like to speak from the perspective of animals because we like to imagine what they're thinking, so I leaned over to him and said, "Look, I'm a dragon!" Haha. The rider's outfit was equally impressive. We also saw Mutts Gone Nuts, a traveling dog show. We got to see several dogs perform a variety of stunts, including Feather, the dog who is currently the World Record holder for jumping the highest - we saw her clear a 68 foot pole easily!! We also saw Geronimo, who apparently has been featured on Ellen for her super awesome Frisbee stunts. It was hilariously entertaining while also extremely impressive, and it was the highlight of the day.
In addition, we saw bulls, cows, sheep, goats, chickens, piglets, and even an alpaca. We saw children riding on ponies and camels. As far as food goes, besides the sweets, Peter and I shared a giant turkey leg (it was soooo delicious) and a loaded baked potato. We also tried some milkshakes (they're thin shakes though, so think of really delicious flavored milk instead of what normally comes to mind when you think of a milkshake) - Peter always has 3-4 of these per trip lol. It was a beautiful day (I mean, it hit the 80s!), and we got there before it was too crowded and left shortly after it had gotten really crowded, so overall, we had a really great time. Let us know if you'd like to join us next year! ; )
